Parent Support: Being Active with Your Kids

Parent Support: Being Active with Your KidsKids need exercise: at least 60 minutes per day says the Government. This can seem daunting with our hectic schedules, but it’s essential. Here's our parent support guide to improving your family's health through exercise with your kids.

1) Good for mind, body and soul

Obviously, the top reason why being active is important is because it keeps the body healthy. If kids are inactive they are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, depression and misbehavior. Socially, children who are active are less likely to be picked on or bullied, which often causes lingering troubles in later years. Being outdoors-active can also teach children how to form relationships outside of the family home.

2) Set a good example

Teachers and friends can be big influences in kids getting outside and active but their route comes from what they do at home and the habits they pick up. If a child's parents are active, the child will be mentally, as well as physically, programmed for that lifestyle. Setting an active example, and backing it up with encouragement, can only have positive effects.

3) Be active together

The best bonding tool is to take part in activities together: this is also the best way to make sure your child exercises. However, group exercise does not have to include you - especially if you're limited for time. The are thousands or clubs and groups to join, or you can simply encourage your child to play with the neighbours, who can keep a watchful eye out for trouble when you're not around.

4) Don’t let the weather get you down

Rain is often seen as a big obstacle in the UK - but it's more like a big excuse. Getting kids involved in sports is essential and acclimatising youngsters to all-weather activities will get them healthier.

5) Reward accordingly

Parents can allow TV and computer game time as reward for healthy activity, but remember to draw the line somewhere. Try not to let these things become labelled as 'relaxation'; equally try not to ban them outright.

6) Keep it fun!

There are so many sports around that there will definately be one that your child can find a passion for. But remember: fun is the key. As soon as being active seems like a chore, the TV and games console will have won. Focus on things that you and your children will love, and keep searching until you find it! You can have fun trying out a range of different activities, but take care not to let them get depressed or feel that they are failing. Keeping spirits high is key.
